Each year Selikor collects approximately 175.000 tons of residential, commercial, yard, construction, and hazardous waste. Each of these waste types requires a different management.
At the Malpais landfill each waste type is managed and processed efficiently to safeguard the environment and to prevent nuisances to the community.
Besides landfilling waste, the Curaçao Incineration Company (CIC) destroys special and hazardous waste in a specially designed incinerator. One of the benefits of waste incineration is that potential soil and groundwater contamination is avoided, subsequently preserving public health. Incineration also reduces the amount of waste filled land.
