Recycling converts materials that would otherwise be considered waste into valuable raw materials to be used in making new products. Recycling reduces the amount of waste that would otherwise end up in the landfill, thus extending the life of the landfill. Actively exploring recycling possibilities is an important endeavor, especially for small islands like Curaçao.
In joint programs with other organizations, Selikor continually encourages waste generators to separate their waste so that it may be recycled. Selikor participates in the recycling of glass, construction and demolition waste, paper and cardboard, all types of metals (including scrap vehicles) and batteries.
At different strategic locations on the island, Selikor placed waste glass collection containers to stimulate Curaçao’s inhabitants to separate their waste glass from other waste and to place it in the containers so it may be exported for recycled. Furthermore Selikor is shareholder in the Caribbean Recycling Company that recycles construction and demolition waste into usable construction material. At our Koral Specht transfer station paper and cardboard can be dropped off. It is then bailed and exported to be recycled. All types of scrap metal and batteries can be dropped of at the Koral Specht transfer station or the Malpais landfill. The metals are processed by a local scrap metal company and then exported to be recycled. The batteries are also exported to be recycled. Selikor is continually seeking opportunities to recycle additional waste streams.
