Selikor NV is proud to announce that our “Waste Characterization Study” has been completed!

Transforming Waste To Value

The study is part of Selikor’s project “Transforming Waste to Value: Developing a Sustainable, Circular, and Resilient Solid Waste Management Structure for Curaçao.” The project’s objective is to collect and analyze waste data to assess shortcomings and challenges within the existing waste management system and to provide solutions to process wastes through reuse, recycling and/or for energy generation, striving to transform waste into value for the community. This must result in more circular and sustainable waste management, a cleaner and healthier living environment, and more awareness for sustainable waste management.

The “Waste Characterization Study” was conducted by local consultant EcoVision, in cooperation with Royal Haskoning DHV and De Afvalspiegel from the Netherlands, to obtain detailed data on the volumes, composition & characterization of solid wastes generated in Curaçao.

The study included registering 6,152 vehicles at the weighbridge at the Malpais Landfill and interviewing their drivers to determine the origins of the wastes being brought for disposal.

During an 8-week sampling and sorting campaign, 96 samples of non-bulky and 143 entire truckloads of bulky waste were sorted by hand. The samples were sorted into 23 different fractions (e.g. paper, plastic, glass, organic, etc.)

The amounts and percentages of the different fractions of wastes for each category of waste are presented in the report.

A survey of wastes not brought to the landfill (e.g. recycled materials, sewage sludge, chicken manure, etc.) was also conducted.

A forecast of the amount of future waste generation under different scenarios is also included in the report.

All this research was made possible with funds from the European Union and supported by The Resilience, Sustainable Energy, and Marine Biodiversity (RESEMBID) which made the funds and technical assistance available.

The report is available via this link: Waste Characterization Study

The next step is for consultants to use the data from the study to conduct a feasibility study to determine the most appropriate waste processing options for Curaçao.
