Selikor NV is responsible for the management of the majority of solid waste generated on Curaçao. We strive to minimize and prevent environmental impacts from our business activities as much as possible and we commit ourselves to comply with all Curaçao and Netherlands Antilles environmental laws and regulations, including the provisions of our nuisance permit. Furthermore, we strive to comply with international environmental laws and regulations for matters that are not (yet) defined in local laws and regulations and that are relevant and applicable to the situation on Curaçao. Our environmental policy is oriented to managing waste in a sustainable and environmentally responsible manner. Important aspects of our environmental policy are:
- Minimize and prevent soil, air, and water contamination as much as possible
- Minimize and prevent nuisances to the surrounding inhabitants and our neighbors as much as possible
- Optimal land use
- Use energy, water, and other resources efficiently
- Implement waste prevention and recycling within Selikor as much as possible
- Employee safety
Our Environmental Policy
Our environmental objectives concretize this environmental policy and these objectives are reviewed annually. In this manner Selikor assures continuous improvement to reduce negative environmental effects and to prevent them whenever possible.

ISO 9001
What is ISO 9001? ISO is an international federation of national normalization organizations from approximately 100 countries. Its name (ISO) is derived from the Greek "isos" which means "equal". The "9001" refers to a series of standards which are numbered in the 9000 range.
ISO 9001 is a quality assurance model and is becoming a condition for doing business. ISO means error reduction resulting from better systematic inspection and testing. This error reduction results from increased employee participation, involvement, awareness and systematic employee training. This will result in better products and services and improved communication both internally and externally.
Selikor obtained the ISO 9001 version 2000 certification for all of its business processes in the year 2003 and has achieved to maintain this certification up to now. Some of the actions taken by Selikor to obtain and maintain this certification include:
- Developing a set of procedures that cover all key processes in the company
- Monitoring processes to make sure they are effective
- Keeping adequate records
- Checking output for defects, with appropriate and corrective action taken where necessary
- Regularly reviewing individual processes and the quality system itself for effectiveness
- Facilitating continual improvement
By becoming ISO registered, Selikor improves its quality, efficiency, on-time delivery, and company/client relations. Our ISO certification not only benefits our company, but you, the community of Curaçao as well.
ISO 14001
After obtaining ISO 9001 certification for all the business processes in 2003, Selikor went for the ISO 14001 certification in 2005 and succeeded in obtaining this certification. ISO 14001 is a well known international reference for environmental management requirements in business-to-business dealings. This encompasses what the organization does to minimize harmful effects to the environment caused by its activities, and to achieve continual improvement of its environmental performance.
The ISO 14000 family is primarily concerned with environmental management and ISO in general has earned a worldwide reputation with its generic management system standards. These standards refer to the organization's structure for managing its processes or activities that transform inputs of resources into a product or service which meet the organization's objectives, such as satisfying the customer's quality requirements, complying with regulations, or meeting environmental objectives.
ISO 14001 enables Selikor to meet its environmental objectives. Effectively, this is another challenge for Selikor to make improvements to achieve its environmental goals. Being ISO 14001 certified makes Selikor a role model for other local organizations to follow this process. Once more, Selikor really takes care of our community and our environment.
